Springtime is also a time of year when many floral designs make an appearance in Appalachian Spring’s jewelry.

One of our latest offerings can be seen in the new Terry Pool collection.

Each of Terry’s creations begins with a handmade sketch, where Terry works out the details of each piece.

Terry also has a sense of humor, as evidenced in this photo we took when we perused Terry’s newest collection, premiered at the American Made Show in DC.  We laughed and enjoyed, as we know you will!

Picasso and NY NOW

This year the NY NOW trade show coincided with MoMA’s unprecedented Picasso sculpture exhibit. Being able to take time to attend this once-in-a-lifetime exhibit helps me appreciate all the great design I see when buying jewelry at the show.

It’s always exciting to see new work from our jewelers.  One of my favorites is Stacy King, who started Lulu Designs in 1997.  Working as a production potter for 10 years gave Stacy insight into the art of balancing form with color. As Stacy became interested in jewelry, her mastery of ceramics gave her unique tools for becoming a self-taught jeweler.

Lulu Designs began as an idea, a desire to create beauty in the world.  Clearly, Stacy’s vision is being realized in every one of her designs – jewelry that is simple yet elegant, handcrafted to let the life and power of each stone and metal shine through.

Terrafirma has arrived!

Ellen Evans, owner and artistic director of the Terrafirma studio, produces exquisite place settings made from a base of warm, natural stoneware juxtaposed with vibrantly colored and patterned porcelain surfaces. Her creative focus is to design and produce high quality, functional works of art for the table and home using a unique, original process.

Patterns are created by painting through textiles and lace using liquid porcelain to produce a distinctive casual yet sophisticated look that has become her signature in both dinnerware and accessories.

Terrafirma products are made entirely by hand and kiln-fired to extremely high temperatures, giving each piece its own personality and great durability.  Slight variations in color, texture and surface blushing are the natural and desired result of the hand building and high-firing process, and assure each piece of its individuality.

Each collectible, copyrighted design is signed and dated.  All Terrafirma pieces are food and dishwasher safe. Place settings can be ordered in our stores where you can mix and match 3 glaze colors with 11 fabric patterns across plates and bowls for your own personal set of dishes.

Infinite Universe is an elegant, eco-friendly accessories and lifestyle brand inspired by nature. The pieces are simply like nothing else I’ve ever seen in the jewelry world – gorgeous mother-of-pearl combined with 14K gold leaf and set in vermeil. Many are accented with white sapphires.  Absolutely mouth-watering!

Meeting the jewelers behind all of this creativity is a highlight of my job. The world of handmade is truly a special place to be!

Shades of Blue

Everywhere I look this season, I see the color blue in all its many lovely hues. Whether it’s clothing, seasonal decorations, or furniture, this perennial favorite is making a statement for Summer 2015!  This is from one of my favorite blogs, Apartment Zero.

Ice Blue Collection by Anna Balkan

Balkan necklace

Jeweler Anna Balkan’s new line in sterling combines the deep hues of London Blue topaz with chalcedony and faceted labradorite. The pieces are versatile because of the neutral tones she has incorporated with the juicy greens and blues. This new collection is available in all of our stores as well as on our website so be sure to take a look!

More Evidence of the “Blue Invasion”

The gorgeous hand-lettering in this downtown Washington DC restaurant sign is highlighted in shades of blue. It stopped me in my tracks!

Hot Off the Press – Art By Any Means

A highlight for our small office staff is when Vanessa’s jewelry arrives – we’ve been waiting for it for months and it never disappoints! Which earrings shall I choose – these? No, those… wait, I think I love this pair the most and can’t wait to wear them. Maybe I’ll even buy a new dress to match…Vanessa earrings

Vanessa’s jewelry display is always appealing and reflects her creativity and unique approach to jewelry design. She makes all of the display pieces herself and they are the perfect backdrop to her earrings and necklaces.

Vanessa display

This stunning necklace is my personal favorite. The large center faux turquoise is surrounded by London blue topaz, pyrite, and crystal. Vanessa always finds amazing stones and creates each piece of jewelry using her gemstones as inspiration.cropped 2
